* Risks of Protein Diets

Protein or hyper protein diets are characterized by protein-rich foods, such as fermented dairy products, meat, fish, sausages and even nutritional supplements with a high protein content. Proteins are supposed to modulate metabolism so that the body needs a greater amount of energy to digest food, causing a rapid sensation of satiety and consequent decrease in appetite.

In addition, if carbohydrates (bread, pasta, sugars, potatoes, rice or other cereals) are eliminated, the body is forced to resort to fat accumulated in the body to obtain the energy required for digestion, Which causes you to lose weight. These diets also limit the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and fruit.

Protein diets that target rapid weight loss, including some very famous ones such as Atkins or Dukan, are a subject of continuing controversy and are generally considered to be miracle diets by nutrition experts and endocrinologists, Since although it is possible to lose weight quickly, they carry important risks for health and once they are abandoned the weight is recovered that has been lost.

Protein diets for weight loss

The consequences for the organism of the protein diets are multiple and some of them serious. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, constipation, malaise, etc. usually appear at the beginning. However, then there are others that should be considered as worrying:

* Loss of muscle mass: the absence of carbohydrates causes the
implementation of a series of mechanisms to obtain energy by
sequestering the glucose present in muscle tissue.

* Formation of ketone bodies (ketosis): the body must resort to the
fats accumulated in the body to decompose them and use them as
a source of energy. In addition to all the aforementioned effects,
ketosis has been shown to produce metabolic acidosis and, as a
consequence, alterations of the nervous system and the
contractibility of the fibers of the cardiac muscle can occur,
favoring the appearance of arrhythmias. Cases of sudden death
and ketone coma have been reported for this cause.

* Alterations in blood analytics: given their high-fat content, hyper
proteins diets increase levels of uric acid, cholesterol, and
   triglycerides.

* Overexertion of the kidneys and liver: the kidneys should make
an extra effort to eliminate the excess protein through the
kidneys, and the liver to be able to metabolize the nutrients, which    can  affect the aggravation of existing pathologies (renal failure)      or In  the appearance of others.

* Deficiency diseases: the alterations of the metabolism that cause
this type of diets makes that the nutrients can not be assimilated
correctly. Added to this is the fact that fruits, vegetables, legumes,
and cereals are hardly ingested, pathologies due to deficiency
states of certain nutrients can occur.
